Further Central Australian images on Wikimedia Commons

In 2024, Wikimedia Australia entered into a partnership with Alice Springs Public Library to add images from their Central Australian Historical Images Collection to Wikimedia Commons. The Isabel and Donald Dowling Collection was the first added collection, which beautifully featured the region and how it changed during World War II. This was the library's digital debut on the Wikimedia Commons platform, bringing the Central Australian Historical Images collection to an online audience for the first time.

In continuation of this partnership a further collection, the Anton Faymann Collection, has been added to Wikimedia Commons. This collection consists of 85 images taken primarily in Alice Springs (Mparntwe) while Anton, an Austrian traveller, was living there and working for the Northern Territory Public Works Department and then the Survey Division between 1957 and 1958. During this time Anton primarily worked as a truck driver and chainman working on improvements to the Stuart Highway south of the town.

17 of these images have now been added to Wikipedia articles and we are hoping for many more to be linked; as an example there are now small selections of beautiful images to accompany the Pitchi Richi Sanctuary page and the Friedrich Wilhelm Albrect biography.

Thanks to the amazing staff at Alice Springs Public Library (including Jordan Phillips, Ella Turner and Carl Mirtschin) for all their help and assistance.
